The I-86 Innovation Corridor Integrated Workforce Development team unveiled their new strategic plan at a public meeting today.
The plan was completed by the help of two consulting teams, “The Council for Adult and Experimental Learning” and “Avalanche Consulting.” Reports done by I-86 Corridor show in 2016 and 2017 that Steuben, Schuyler and Chemung counties were facing current and future workforce gaps. This was due to population loss, aging labor, a shrinking labor force and lack of education as well as required skills. They’re now working to change that.
“What we know is, that when site selectors come looking to put businesses in our community, one of the very first questions they’ll ask is whether or not we have a skilled workforce, a trained workforce, not just for today but, for tomorrow. So this strategy, this integrated process of pulling together our assets and quite frequently addressing some of our shortfalls and some of our liabilities in terms of making sure we can answer those questions from businesses in an appropriate way, that’s an important feature of this strategy,” said Mike Krusen, President of Southern Tier Economic Growth.
