The Chemung County Legislature’s Republican majority voted unanimously Monday to support Legislator David Manchester as their chairman, as well as name Rodney Strange as majority leader.

Manchester, who represents District 2, which covers the Town of Big Flats, will replace retiring chairwoman Donna Draxler.

“I’m looking forward to working with the (Christopher) Moss administration and all of our legislative representatives,” Manchester said. “We plan to continue to hold the line on property taxes for Chemung County residents, and work closely with the city, towns and villages to foster economic growth.”

Moss, a Republican, was elected county executive in a three-way race to replace retiring Executive Tom Santulli.

Manchester has served on the Chemung County Legislature for the past eight years. He currently serves as the chairman of the Aviation Committee, and on the Budget and Highway committees as well.  Manchester retired from Corning Inc. in May.

“I appreciate Dave’s confidence in me, it’s an exciting new opportunity,” Burin said.

Also at their meeting Monday, the Republican members voted to name Legislator Rodney J. Strange as majority leader beginning next year. Strange, who is also the chairman of the Chemung County Republican Committee, has served on the legislature for the past eight years. He currently serves on the Budget, Corrections and Law Enforcement, and Highway Legislative Committees. He represents the 15th legislative district.

While Manchester must be approved by the full legislature, Republicans maintained heavy control in the general elections earlier this month, making his approval as chairman a formality.

On January 1, 2019, the Chemung County Legislature will hold is organizational meeting to swear in the newly elected officials. The meeting will take place at 1 pm on the 5th floor of the Hazlett Building
