The Chemung County Legislature voted unanimously at its April 14th full legislature meeting to oppose Governor Cuomo’s plan to pay for college degrees for state prison inmates.
Under Cuomo’s plan, the state taxpayers would foot the bill for the college education of state prisoners in state correctional facilities.
“It is unconscionable to even think that the hard working people of New York state should pay for the education of criminals,” Legislator Rodney J. Strange said. “When our young people go tens of thousands of dollars into debt to further their education, the proposal by the Governor to provide a free eduacation to convicted felons is absolutely ludicrous,” Strange said. “This type of spending by the Governor has got to stop!”
