The Traffic Safety Study called for by Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss, Legislator Rodney J. Strange and the Southport Town Board after another deadly vehicle accident at the intersection of State Route 328 and State Route 14 in South[port has begun.
A letter received late last month from New York State Regional Traffic Engineer Martin Butler confirmed that the state was conducting a new study of the accident prone intersection.
“While review of our files reveals several past studies, I agree it’s time to look at this again with a fresh set of eyes,” Butler said.”Upon the tragic news of the fatal accident at this location in July we immediately began to review the files and accident reports in an effort to obtain the base data needed to assess the situation and to build our analysis. Additionally we deployed a video traffic count system which will allow us to better understand the dynamics of the traffic movements and operations.”
Butler says such a detailed analysis will take some time to complete but the state will make it a priority.
