At its June 12th meeting of the County Legislature, a resolution was passed that urges Governor Cuomo and the State DEC to expedite the cleanup of the Elmira High School toxic waste site.
15th District Legislator Rodney J. Strange sought the legislature’s support of the resolution and urged them to vote in favor of it.
“This resolution is just the beginning of what I hope is a constant drumbeat by the legislature, the county, our elected officials and our residents to get this toxic mess cleaned up once and for all,” Strange said. “Cleanup of the school is underway but needs to be completed much sooner. We cannot afford to drag our feet any longer. We must demand that the entire neighborhood be investigated and tested for any toxic material that could harm our residents. We need this investigation to be complete, comprehensive and accurate as to the extent of the chemical contamination in our community. We must work hard together in a united front to make our area safe and free of dangerous contaminates that could be causing major health problems for our people,” Strange said. “I will continue to work with former County Legislator Andy Patros and his citizens committee to pressure state government, DEC and health department to clean this up and do what needs to be done to remediate this 40 year nightmare,” Strange concluded.
