For the second time in four years, the county’s Senior Citizen Tax Exemption was changed to allow more low income seniors to receive a percentage off their county property taxes. The first increase in the income amount a senior property owner could make and still qualify for an exemption came in 2019, the first in over 20 years.
Seniors in Towns in Chemung County have until March 1st to apply for the exemption and in the City of Elmira they have until June 1st. The reduction in property taxes will begin with the January 2023 tax bills. You must apply every year to receive the exemption. Call your Town or City Tax Assessor for application details.
