Chemung County Executive Chris Moss met with the County Legislature’s Budget Committee on September 8th and laid out his proposal for a new sales tax distribution agreement with its 16 towns and villages for the next two years. The current agreement was adopted in October of 2018 and is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2020.
Chemung County faces a looming budget deficit of anywhere from 5 to 9 million dollars. The budget deficit is a direct result of the economic collapse from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new proposal will keep the distribution the the same as it is currently for 2021 but will decrease the amount local municipalities receive for the fiscal year beginning on January 1, 2022. Under this proposal, the county will be keeping approximately 1 million more than it receives under the current agreement. The new agreement must be approved by the legislature this Fall.
