Chemung County Treasurer Jennifer Furman presented the County’s 2020 year end report to the County Legislature’s Budget Committee at their meeting on June 7th.
The report showed the county ended 2020 with a budget surplus of $2.9 million. This was particularly great news with what some predicted would be a catastrophic fiscal picture because of the devastation to the economy because of COVID-19. It was predicted that we could have seen a budget deficit of anywhere between $5 and $20 million early on in the pandemic.
She pointed out that much of the credit goes to the County Executive because of budget cuts he implemented in June of 2020 that included a hiring freeze, cuts to the travel budget, capital construction, highway projects and across the board cuts in every department budget.
