Chemung County Legislator Rodney J. Strange urges residents around the area of Elmira High School to attend the meeting and ask any questions they may have concerning any aspect of the contamination and cleanup.
Elmira High School and the former Sperry Remington property is in the 15th legislative district.
The former Sperry Remington property, purchased by the Elmira City School District in 1977, was used for heavy industry for nearly a century and is on the state’s brownfield cleanup program list.
Extensive remediation has already taken place at the site.
The Interim Remedial Measure identifies soil cleanup activities to be completed by Unisys prior to the school district’s replacement of the parking lot and bus loop on the southeast side of the high school property, scheduled for this summer.
Since July 2014, Unisys has collected more than 1,000 soil samples at various depths across the 34-acre site. Analysis has identified polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals as contaminants of concern in the subsurface soils at the site.
Ongoing remediation this summer will include excavation of about 1.6 acres of contaminated fill material and soils down to 14 feet below ground surface, and offsite disposal of approximately 6,200 cubic yards of PCBs.
Clean fill will be brought in, and acceptable excavated soils will be re-used to complete the back-filling of the excavation at the site.
The work is expected to start in June and be completed before the start of school in September.
